UK Welcomes Israeli PM Netanyahu’s Transfer to Pause Judicial Reform
LONDON (Reuters) -British Overseas Secretary James Cleverly praised Israel’s determination to pause laws to reform its judiciary on Monday, emphasising the significance of “checks and balances” after widespread protests over the contested plans.
“The UK welcomes the choice at present by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pause laws to reform Israel’s judiciary,” Cleverly stated in an announcement after Netanyahu delayed the choice till subsequent month amid mass protests.
“It’s critical that the shared democratic values that underpin that (UK-Israel) relationship are upheld, and a sturdy system of checks and balances are preserved,” Cleverly added, echoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s stance.
