U.S., China Pledge to Keep Communications as Two High Officers Meet

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Biden administration’s prime safety adviser met with China’s prime diplomat this week and pledged to maintain strains of communication open, the White Home mentioned on Thursday, as Washington and Beijing search a path ahead amid strained relations.

Nationwide Safety Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese language prime diplomat Wang Yi met in Vienna on Wednesday and Thursday, and mentioned Russia’s warfare on Ukraine, amongst different points, the White Home mentioned in an announcement.

“The 2 sides had candid, substantive, and constructive discussions on key points within the U.S.-China bilateral relationship, international and regional safety points, Russia’s warfare in opposition to Ukraine, and cross-Strait points, amongst different subjects,” it mentioned, calling the assembly “a part of ongoing efforts to take care of open strains of communication and responsibly handle competitors.”

“The 2 sides agreed to take care of this necessary strategic channel of communication to advance these goals,” the White Home mentioned, including that the talks sought to construct on U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese language President Xi Jinping’s assembly in Indonesia in November.
