The Steelers offered Russell Wilson one thing the Giants didn’t

Russell Wilson would have been glued to the Giants’ bench unless Daniel Jones were to get injured again.

The Giants made no promises to Wilson about playing time during their “exploratory meeting” before Wilson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, The Athletic confirmed, with Big Blue publicly committed to Jones as their 2024 starter as he rehabs his torn ACL.

It seems simple enough, though Seahawks general manager John Schneider caused confusion about the Giants’ level of openness toward a quarterback competition when he claimed the Giants sold Drew Lock, Seattle’s former Geno Smith backup, on having an opportunity to win the starting job in East Rutherford.

But Lock, who signed a one-year, $5 million contract that is fully guaranteed, said during a press conference on Friday he was told Jones was the Giants’ starter.

Lock becomes the Giants’ new backup after Tyrod Taylor signed with the Jets on a two-year, $12 million contract with $8.5 million guaranteed, leaving Tommy DeVito’s future up in the air.

Though Jones is entering Year 2 of a four-year, $160 million contract, the Giants could dump Jones after the 2024 NFL season with a $22.2 million dead cap hit if they decide he’s no longer a franchise quarterback.

The Giants have another five-plus weeks to decide if they want to take a quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

But for now, Jones is set to be under center in Week 1 if he’s healthy, making it an easy decision for Wilson to sign with Pittsburgh, where he’ll be the starter after the Broncos decided they’d rather eat $85 million in dead money on their salary cap than bring him back for a third season.

The Steelers completely shook up their quarterback room, trading a reportedly unhappy Kenny Pickett to the Eagles and acquiring Justin Fields from the Bears, two years after drafting Pickett in the first round.
