The Taylor Swift implications of Patrick, Brittany Mahomes partnering with Kim Kardashian

The Chiefs are all but daring the football gods to crumble their kingdom.
A fascinating wrinkle has emerged as tight end Travis Kelce is dating recording megastar Taylor Swift, and Swift has developed a rapport with the Chiefs’ significant others, Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, in particular.
On Thursday, Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS brand unveiled a new ad campaign featuring the couple and their young children, Bronze and Sterling, modeling seasonal pieces from the loungewear line.
Under normal circumstances, sports fans might bat an eye at this scenario and briefly wonder if Mahomes is flouting the infamous Curse of the Kardashians by doing this campaign amid a dual MVP and Super Bowl championship defense — but the thought would be fleeting.
SKIMS has been strategically expanding its endorsements in professional sports, doing campaigns with stars like Neymar, Nick Bosa and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while also becoming the official underwear brand of the NBA (commissioner Adam Silver even boasted about wearing their undergarments).
But then you have to remember there’s a whole other element.
Namely, Kardashian and Swift’s years-long feud.
The beef dates back to 2016, when Kardashian was married to Kanye West, who put out the song “Famous” that included lyrics suggesting he “might still have sex” with Swift because “I made that bitch famous.”
The end of that lyric is a reference to West infamously interrupting Swift as she accepted the award for Best Female Video at the 2009 Video Music Awards.
After the lyrics were met with backlash, Kardashian released a Snapchat video purporting to show Swift giving her blessing for the vulgar lyrics.
Swift proceeded to accuse the then-couple of “character assassination,” alleging that she had been “falsely painted as a liar” and suggesting the video had been selectively edited.
“Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me ‘that bitch’ in his song? It doesn’t exist because it never happened,” she fumed. “I wanted to believe Kanye when he told me that I would love the song. I wanted us to have a friendly relationship. He promised to play the song for me, but he never did.”
It would be one thing if Kelce and Swift were dating in a vacuum, but Swift and Brittany have seemingly grown particularly close.
The two developed a secret handshake to celebrate Chiefs touchdowns, and have otherwise been partying together, including other players’ wives in the reveling.
Perhaps this SKIMS campaign was agreed to before Swift and Brittany became close, but one cannot discount the extent to which an imbroglio like this could sink a successful football season.
Then throw in the fact that Kelce is reportedly traveling to Argentina on the Chiefs’ bye week to catch an international leg of Swift’s “Eras Tour,” and you wonder just how much karma subversion the football gods will let the defending Super Bowl champs get away with.
