An Iowa Republican who voted against Rep. Jim Jordan for the House speakership said she has received “credible death threats” since withdrawing her support for him in the second round of voting.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks said she has gotten “a barrage of threatening calls” and multiple threats to her life after she voted for Rep. Kay Granger, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, on Wednesday afternoon.

Miller-Meeks initially voted for Jordan, a staunch Ohio conservative, in the first vote for speaker on Tuesday before she changed her pick the following day.

Jordan was nominated by the majority of his party last week but failed twice to garner enough votes to be elected the new House speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the post.

On Wednesday, Jordan received 199 votes from his Republican colleagues, 18 shy of the 217 needed to secure the speakership.

The House is expected to give Jordan yet another chance with a third vote Thursday.

Miller-Meeks said she will not let the threats impact her decision-making in the next vote.

“One thing I cannot stomach, or support is a bully,” she said. “I did not stand for bullies before I voted for Chairwoman Granger and when I voted for Speaker designee Jordan, and I will not bend to bullies now.”

She did not say who was making the threats but notified authorities.

Jordan spoke out against the scare tactics.

“We condemn all threats against our colleagues and it is imperative that we come together,” he said in a post on X. “Stop. It’s abhorrent.”

Lawmakers who voted against the Ohio Republican said he has been nothing but cordial in conversations seeking their support but many have said his followers deploy bully tactics to try to earn their vote.
