The thrilling revival of future Hall-of-Fame goaltender Jonathan Quick made this an easy decision for the Rangers.
So before the anticipated flurry of trade deadline week, president and general manager Chris Drury looked a bit further down the line and signed the 38-year-old netminder to a one-year extension with an average annual value of $1.275 million.
In addition to a $500,000 signing bonus, Quick’s contract has a 20-team no-trade clause and a $25,000 performance bonus if he makes 20 starts and posts a .915 save percentage, according to a source.
Quick, who has played the backup role but has never looked like one since the regular season started, is tied with the Kraken’s Joey Daccord for the sixth-lowest goals-against average in the NHL at 2.45.
His .916 save percentage is also ranked sixth in the NHL.
The Connecticut native, who grew up a Rangers fan, is one win away from tying Dominik Hasek for the 15th most in the NHL history with 389, as well as three wins away from tying Ryan Miller for the most amongst American-born goalies.
