Mets’ David Peterson to miss start of 2024 season after hip surgery

David Stearns acknowledged Tuesday that the Mets are “short on pitching.”

They’re now a little shorter.

The Mets announced Wednesday that left-handed pitcher David Peterson underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and the return timetable for the procedure is usually six to seven months.

That means Peterson won’t be ready to pitch until at least early May.

The 28-year-old has mostly been a starter for the Mets but had a rough 2023 season, finishing with a 5.03 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 111 innings across 21 starts and six relief appearances.

Peterson is entering his first year of arbitration and is under team control through the 2026 season.

While Peterson may not have cracked the rotation out of spring training, he figured to at least be one of the team’s top depth options.
