A Massachusetts man has been charged with raping a woman after posing as an Uber driver and picking her up from a Boston nightclub on Saturday.
The woman left Bijou Nightclub early Saturday around 2:21 a.m. and entered a blue car being driven by Qabel Najeeb, believing he was her Uber, The Boston Globe reported.
Najeeb, 29, drove past Boston Common and pulled up behind some buildings.
He then placed a T-shirt over the rear window of his car to obscure the view and then allegedly raped the woman, police said in a report.
“The victim said that the assault lasted a few minutes before the driver stopped,” a Boston police detective wrote in the report.
“After the assault, the driver drove the victim around before dropping her off near her house.”
Police responded to the home of the 32-year-old victim at 4:47 a.m. when she reported the assault.
She was then transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where she was interviewed by detectives.
The next day, she contacted the police to report a strange phone number that appeared on her phone. The number — and the blue car — both allegedly belong to Najeeb.
Police investigators said they used video surveillance and descriptions provided by the victim to identify the car.
“This is a terrifying incident involving a woman who entered a vehicle with the full understanding that she was going to be delivered home in safety and a driver who took advantage of the victim and the situation,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a news release Wednesday.
“This is the beginning of the process of seeking justice, and we will stay beside this victim during and after this difficult time,” Hayden added.
Najeeb, who is from Worcester, was arrested Sunday and charged with rape.
He pleaded not guilty in municipal court on Monday and bail was set at $10,000.
He is set to appear again in court on Nov. 15.
Uber told The Boston Globe that Najeeb is not a driver for the ride-booking service.
