Joel Embiid has left meniscus injury in latest 76ers concern

The 76ers have taken another hit after their star’s knee injury evaluation results came in.

Joel Embiid has injured his lateral meniscus in his left knee after hurting himself in Tuesday’s game against the Warriors, the team announced.

Embiid will remain out through the weekend while a treatment plan for him is finalized, ESPN reported on Thursday.

The injury is the second big punch against the 76ers on Thursday after they were fined $75,000 by the league for failing to include Embiid on the injury report “in an accurate and timely manner” ahead of a game against the Nuggets last Saturday.

The former MVP hurt his left knee against the Pacers last Thursday — which was two days before the Nuggets game — though he played 31 minutes and scored 31 points against Indianapolis.

He sat out the following two games against the Nuggets and then the Trailblazers on Monday — both losses — and returned against the Warriors on Tuesday before re-injuring himself in the final minutes.

An extended absence from their star could heavily shake up the Eastern Conference race, as the 76ers have gone 3-9 without Embiid so far this season.

Heading into Thursday’s game in Utah, they sit in fifth place in the conference with a 29-17 record.

Embiid’s injury situation could further help the Knicks (31-17), who have found themselves on an eight-game winning hot streak and are in third in the conference behind the Bucks (32-16) and leading Celtics (37-11).

Since adding OG Anunoby in a trade with the Raptors for Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett, the Knicks have gone 14-2 heading into Thursday night’s game against the Pacers.

Also in jeopardy could be Embiid’s MVP candidacy, as he has only appeared in 34 of the 76ers’ 46 games, and the NBA requires candidates to play in at least 65 games to remain eligible for the award.

With 36 remaining in the regular season, Embiid only can miss five more games.
