Iowa bar is offering free beers until underdog Hawkeyes score versus Michigan

At least one bar in Iowa will bank on the Hawkeyes scoring some points against Michigan in the Big Ten title game.

X-Golf Cedar Rapids — which contains golf simulators and a driving range, along with a restaurant and bar — plans to offer free beer to customers starting at 7 p.m. local time until Iowa manages to score against the Wolverines, according to a post on the company’s Facebook page.

“Book a 7pm Bay Time and receive draft beer at no charge until Iowa scores, the game ends or your bay time ends,” the post read. “See staff for details!”

It doesn’t sound like the first time the company has offered the promotion, as the post said the promotion is “back.”

But this time, the Hawkeyes might struggle to help X-Golf make some money on its beer sales.

X-Golf even got a shoutout on ESPN’s “College GameDay” when host Rece Davis mentioned the free beer offer brought to him by one of the researchers — prompting the company to record the clip and reply to their initial post with the video.

No. 16 Iowa’s odds for point totals in each half were set at 0.5 earlier this week, which is a brutal total after the Hawkeyes averaged 4.3 yards per play and scored 22 touchdowns across their 12 regular-season games.

They have the fourth-worst passing offense (123.4 yards per game), the worst total offense (246.3 yards per game) and the second-worst passing efficiency.

Even their rushing offense sits at No. 103 out of 130.

Still, Iowa has somehow managed to win 10 games despite scoring just 210 points and has a chance to perhaps knock the No. 2 Wolverines out of contention for a College Football Playoff spot.

The challenge, though, will be to score enough points against Michigan — which ranks No. 2 in total defense at 246.8 and No. 1 in scoring defense — and keep J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum and the rest of its offense from torching the Iowa defense.

“Yeah, we’ve been here before,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters Sunday. “We’ve actually won a couple of games like this in the last 25 years. We’ve got to play our best football. And, you know, anything is possible in sports. I think we’ve all seen that.”

The Wolverines haven’t lost this season, and they’ll get head coach Jim Harbaugh back on the sidelines following his suspension as a result of the sign-stealing scandal and investigation.
