Giants staring at potential quarterback crisis after Tyrod Taylor injury

[ad_1]

Who plays quarterback for the Giants in Vegas?

It will not be Tyrod Taylor, who was sent to the hospital with an injury to his rib cage after sustaining a hit in the second quarter of Sunday’s 13-10 overtime loss to the Jets.

It probably will not be Daniel Jones, who missed his third consecutive game with a neck issue and is on the mend, but likely not ready to return this week.

Will it be Tommy DeVito, who made his NFL debut and, other than running for a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter, did not do much of anything in a rough outing?

It certainly appears as if the Giants need to add another quarterback.

They not long ago had Ian Book and Matt Barkley in for tryouts.

There is Trevor Siemian on the Jets’ practice squad.

There is not much out there, but the Giants need a healthy right (or left) arm to fill out their roster at the most important position on the field.

“I’m not there,’’ coach Brian Daboll said about adding another quarterback, saying he will speak Monday with general manager Joe Schoen.

Jones is getting “close’’ to returning, a source told The Post.

The next and last hurdle for him is to pass certain strength requirements to make sure the left side of his neck is fine.

Jones has said the symptoms were also felt in his left shoulder.

There has been significant weakness in his left arm, according to NFL Network.

Those symptoms are believed to be almost completely gone.

Taylor spent Sunday night at Hackensack University Medical Center, undergoing further evaluation and observation.

Under constant pressure and duress from the Jets, it seemed as if it were only a matter of time before harm came to the 34-year old journeyman, who was 1-1 in his first two starts for the Giants.

It happened with 7:30 remaining in the second quarter.

Taylor, forced out of the pocket once again, recovered his own fumble and headed to the right sideline. Taylor was tackled from behind by Quinton Jefferson as C.J. Mosley landed on Taylor with the full weight of his 231 pounds.

Taylor stayed down on the turf as he was attended to by Giants medical personnel and was able to jog off the field, in obvious discomfort.

DeVito, a New Jersey native who played his high school ball at Don Bosco Prep, finished completing 2 of 7 passes for minus-1 yard.

“Obviously, we handed it off a bunch,’’ Daboll said. “He controlled the huddle. He’s made progress since he’s been here, but we didn’t throw it much.’’

DeVito could make his first NFL start against the Raiders in Las Vegas.

It is uncertain whether Jones will be back and unlikely that anyone the Giants might sign will be able to learn enough of the offense to take over.

“A lot of emotions,’’ DeVito said. “Wish it would’ve ended better to fulfill those emotions but the little kid in me is smiling right now that I got to play in an NFL game and really in a meaningful NFL game. I just wish the outcome would’ve been different.’’
