“General Hospital” has pulled the old switcheroo again, this time with Lindsay Hartley temporarily replacing Kelly Monaco as Sam McCall.
It’s the third time in three weeks the ABC daytime soap has temporarily recast a role.
It’s also the third time that Hartley has stepped in as Sam for Monaco, having done so in episodes that aired in 2020 and 2022, according to Soap Opera Network.
Hartley, who appeared as Sam in the show’s Jan. 2 episode, played Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald on “Passions” and has also had stints on “All My Children” and “Days of Our Lives.”
Hartley’s past appearances as Sam found her playing romantic scenes opposite Dominic Zamprogna (Dante Falconeri). Dante and Sam have been romantically involved on the show since 2021, according to SON.
“Some big shoes to fill … precious too. I hope you enjoy watching Sam as much as I have enjoyed playing her, temporarily,” Hartley said then.
Hartley, 45, played Lopez-Fitzgerald on “Passions” for nine years and, in 2009, was cast in the role of Arianna Hernandez on “Days of Our Lives.” She followed that up in 2010 as Cara Castillo on “All My Children.”
Last week, Nicole Paggi (“Hope & Faith”) temporarily subbed for Kirsten Storms on “GH” as Maxie Jones. Storms also missed time on “GH” in 2021 after undergoing brain surgery; Maxie was not recast and her absence was explained by her leaving Port Charles with her baby to go to Texas, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Before Paggi subbed for Storms on “GH,” Courtney Fulk temporarily replaced Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks) when McCoy took a leave of absence after her mother died in November.
McCoy is expected to return to “GH” this month for episodes that will start airing in February.
Monaco is already back on the “GH” set and is expected to appear on the show next week when it pays tribute to beloved star Jacklyn Zeman, who played Bobbie Spencer for more than 40 years.
In the storyline, the show’s characters in Port Charles will learn about Bobbie’s death, according to SON.
Zeman died in May at the age of 70 after battling cancer.
The Zeman tribute episodes will air Jan. 10 and 11 on “GH.”
Monaco, 47, has played Sam McCall on “GH” since 2003 and played two characters on “Port Charles,” Tess Ramsey and Livvie Locke-Clay.
