Frank Wycheck, Titans ‘Music City Miracle’ hero, dead at 52

Frank Wycheck, a three-time Pro Bowl tight end and a key figure in the Titans’ famed “Music City Miracle” victory, was found dead Saturday at his Tennessee home.

He was 52.

“At this time, it appears Wycheck fell inside his Chattanooga, TN home and hit his head on Saturday morning. He was found unresponsive that afternoon,” Wycheck’s family said in a statement, according to the Titans’ official website.

Wycheck was drafted by Washington in 1993 and played 11 NFL seasons, the final nine with the Oilers and the Titans, bridging the franchise’s relocation from Houston to Tennessee.

He finished his career with 505 receptions for 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl nods from 1998-2000.

Wycheck also made the cross-field lateral pass on a kickoff return to Kevin Dyson, who ran 75 yards for a touchdown to lift the Titans to a miracle win in Nashville over the Bills in the AFC Wild Card game in 2000.

Wycheck, who served as a Titans broadcaster after retiring in 2003 due to a series of concussions, was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2013.

He is survived by two adult daughters and three grandchildren.

According to its statement, Wycheck’s family plans to work with experts for ongoing brain injury (TBI) and CTE research, per his wishes.

Wycheck said in 2017 he was “sure” he had CTE.
