Fans rip ump Dan Iassogna for poor Phillies-Diamondbacks NLCS Game 3 outing

At least he missed them both ways.

Umpire Dan Iassogna, behind the plate for Thursday’s NLCS Game 3, missed a bevy of calls in the Diamondbacks’ 2-1 walk-off win over the Phillies.

Iassogna, one of the lowest-rated umps on the season, heard it from Arizona’s Tommy Pham after a called third strike that was inside in the bottom of the second.

He likewise got some feedback from Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh after a high fastball was called a strike in the top of the sixth.

The night really got out of hand for Iassogna in the ninth with the teams tied at 1-all.

Iassogna drew Diamondbacks reliever Paul Sewald’s ire by calling his 94-mph fastball to Alec Bohm that clipped the corner of the strike zone a ball, extending the frame by making it a 3-2 count with two outs.

Sewald was able to ring up Bohm on the next pitch, but Iassogna’s night was for from over.

In the bottom half of the inning, with the Diamondbacks threatening, the ball-caller got a hand from first base ump Lance Barksdale.

With Emmanuel Rivera facing an 0-2 count with Lourdes Gurriel on third and Gavin Smith on second and no outs, Craig Kimbrel’s 87-mph knuckle-curve caused Rivera to check his swing.

Iassogna went to Barksdale, who deemed the batter had not gone, drawing a “Really?” From Kimbrel.

Emmanuel used his free pitch to send a hard ground ball to Phillies shortstop Trea Turner, who was able to get Gurriel at home on a fielder’s choice.

Still, replays of the check swing were not kind to either ump.

“Boy looked like he went right there,” the TBS broadcasters said. “He might have got away with that. A break for the Diamondbacks.”

According to Umpire Auditor, questions about Iassogna’s night weren’t unfounded: he missed 14 calls and had a correct call rate of 89.4% — below that of umpire pariah Angel Hernandez’s last-place average of 90.4%.

Fans took notice as well.

“Game woulda been in extra innings and the outcome could’ve been different if he made correct calls,” one user responded to Umpire Auditors’ TikTok video review.

“I hope they review that today and don’t put him back in,” another added.

“The umpires were so bad that a lot of people think this game was fixed,” one fan noted, “but they were bad for both sides.”

Iassogna, who finished the regular season ranked 79 out of 92 qualified umps by the Umpire Auditor account, found himself under even more scrutiny as the series was extended to at least a fifth game thanks to Arizona’s win Thursday.

“why [is] someone ranked 79th out of 92 umps calling the NLCS?” one fan wondered.
