ACC Championship preview
The ACC men’s basketball tournament may not be in Greensboro anymore, but tonight’s championship game will have a North Carolina flare when the Tar Heels take on the NC State Wolfpack.
UNC was expected to be here after winning the ACC in the regular season, and its trip to the tournament championship game has been relatively smooth. The Tar Heels easily dispatched Florida State on Thursday, then pulled away from Pitt last night thanks to 26 points from ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis.
Davis has been excellent all season for the Tar Heels, Armando Bacot is a double-double machine, and Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan are great veteran presences. It’s easy to see why this UNC team has high hopes entering the NCAA Tournament.
Speaking of March Madness, NC State is squarely on the bubble, but that could change with a win tonight. The Wolfpack have won four straight ACC Tournament games to get to this point, perhaps none more impressive than their overtime win over Virginia last night. Senior guard Michael O’Connell hit a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game to OT, then big man DJ Burns Jr led the way in the extra period to move on.
NC State also has a strong backcourt with DJ Horne, Casey Morsell, and Jayden Taylor. This Pack team is playing great basketball, so the favored Tar Heels will be in for a tough challenge.
