Deshaun Watson fires back at critics over curious Browns absence

As the Deshaun Watson saga becomes more bizarre by the day, the Browns quarterback clapped back at those questioning his desire to return.

“I worked my ass off for two years to get back to playing, so why wouldn’t I want to play? This is what I’ve been doing since I was six years old, so why wouldn’t I want to play?” Watson said Thursday. “I see the same things, the narrative … all of that stuff is just trying to (cause) controversy and commotion.

“Why wouldn’t I want to play? I don’t do this for no other reason. I see that too, see the whole contract situation and all of that stuff. That’s for people to talk and create narratives.”

Watson’s status has been one of the talks of the NFL over the past few weeks due to its twists and turns, which included him being ruled out for the upcoming Week 8 road game against the Seahawks.

It all started after Watson’s best game of the year in Week 3 against the Titans.

Watson received the questionable tag for the Week 4 game against the Ravens but ultimately did not play. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said he expected Watson to be ready following the Week 5 bye for a home game against the 49ers in Week 6.

The extra week didn’t help Watson heal and he missed that game, and the dual-threat quarterback finally made it back to the field in Week 7 against Indianapolis.

Watson exited the game early after a hard hit. Even though Watson passed concussion tests, he did not return to the game.

Stefanski told reporters he wanted to protect his quarterback, thus not letting him return.

Well, apparently the situation changed since Sunday with Stefanski on Wednesday ruling out Watson for this week’s game and saying Watson should “rest this week and focus on the rehab.”

“I’m fine, I’m happy,” Watson said. “I’m not happy with the injury but I’m in a great space mentally, I’m in a great spot spiritually. Physically, everything else is in a great space except my shoulder. So, we are working hard to get that back.

The will-he, won’t-he situation has caused some to speculate if Watson is roaring to get back to the field, especially since his five-year, $230 million contract is guaranteed.

“None of those national people know me, they don’t talk to me,” Watson said. “Why would anybody listen to any of that stuff, all of that speculation?

“If it ain’t coming from me, all of that other s–t is bulls–t.”

Watson did not reveal Thursday any potential timeline for his return.

“Since I can’t use my right shoulder and that’s my throwing arm, it’s hard to direct balls and get the ball where I want it to get to, pass a certain amount with a certain velocity while the defenders running around. It’s the one thing I need to play the position at a high level especially,” Watson said. “We just don’t know. Until the staff, medical staff, coaching staff, myself feel very, very comfortable I can be the quarterback people saw in Tennessee, then we just got to take it back day by day. … It could be tomorrow, it could be next week. I don’t know. We have to take it day by day.”
