‘SNL’ spoofs ‘Barbie’ film trailer with American Woman doll sketch

“Barbie” fever has hit “Saturday Evening Reside.” 

Greta Gerwig’s live-action spin on the enduring Mattel toy received a droll parody trailer in Saturday’s episode of the NBC comedy sequence. In a pre-taped sketch, “SNL” forged members think about what it’d appear to be if American Woman dolls received their very own film. Naturally, the outcomes are lower than ideally suited. 

The unique American Woman dolls are fictional characters from varied time durations. In consequence, a traditionally correct movie would function grave topics similar to conflict, slavery, sickness and demise. 

“My daddy’s a prisoner of conflict,” says Molly (Molly Kearney), a World Battle II-era character. “And tragically, I’ve glasses.” 

“That is OK,” says Addy (Ego Nwodim), a younger Black woman rising up throughout the Civil Battle. “I do not know my birthday as a result of I am a runaway slave.” 

A chipper voiceover explains that in contrast to “Barbie,” there aren’t any boyfriends or pink Corvettes on this story.

“Did all their members of the family die of imprecise, old-timey illnesses? Completely,” the narration says. “Come for the enjoyable, keep for the overburdened preteens carrying 4 layers of petticoats and pantaloons.” 

The tongue-in-cheek trailer ends with a number of American Ladies contracting cholera, whereas Josefina (Ana de Armas) broadcasts her plan to cease the Spanish-American Battle. At one level, they dump a useless physique from a coated wagon. 

de Armas hosted “SNL” for the primary time this weekend alongside musical visitor Karol G. The Cuban actress performed a Spanish scholar, game-show contestant and hip-hop vocalist in her sketches, and mirrored on studying to talk English in her monologue. 

“Barbie” (in theaters July 21) spawned a number of memes with its new trailer and character posters earlier this month.
