Certainly one of college football’s top quarterback competitions is seemingly already over.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian made it clear Saturday that sophomore Quinn Ewers, not freshman Arch Manning, is the Longhorns’ beginning quarterback.
“I feel it is fairly clear to say Quinn’s our beginning quarterback and we really feel excellent about that,” Sarkisian mentioned after Texas’ spring sport.
Sarkisian didn’t reveal if Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning and the highest recruit within the Class of 2023, is QB2, or if he’s behind redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy.
“I haven’t got to determine a pecking order proper now. That is the fantastic thing about it. I’ve one other 29 practices to go in fall camp,” Sarkisian mentioned.

Ewers, who began 10 video games for the Longhorns final season after transferring from Ohio State, completed 16 of his 23 passes for 195 yards and a landing in Saturday’s spring sport. “I believed Quinn was actually environment friendly as we speak,” Sarkisian mentioned.
Murphy went 9-for-13 for 165 yards whereas Manning accomplished simply 5 of his 13 go makes an attempt.
“I feel to be truthful to those guys, Maalik, that was his first spring that he ever had. He did not get spring a 12 months in the past,” Sarkisian mentioned. “Arch, these had been his first 15 practices of his life in school. So, generally, we will rush to judgment on the place guys are at.”
Even with Ewers, who was the highest general recruit within the 2021 class, established on the high, Sarkisian is “fired up” about Texas’ QB room.
“I do not ever need to take the stinger of those different guys that they don’t seem to be competing for one thing, that they don’t seem to be striving for one thing, as a result of they’re all gifted gamers,” Sarkisian mentioned. “They’re nice teammates with each other. I feel all of them respect how laborious every of them work. I feel we’re in a really lucky place to have three high quality guys in that room that work the way in which that they do.”
