Indeed, Meredith convinces Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to ignore her IRB ban from surgery to operate on Nick, as she is the only one she trusts. 

Once Nick is out of a successful surgery, Meredith does something she previously said she’d never do. 

“Marry me,” she asked Nick, to which he joked, “How badlly was I hurt?” 

To which Meredith replied, “About enough to think about all the people that I’ve lost, and I really don’t want to lose you.”

As she put it, “It turns out, me not being married to you has not protected me from anything and I love you and I love our life together and I don’t want my fear to get in the way of that anymore.”

And while Meredith admitted she does not want a traditional wedding, Nick immediately accepted her proposal. 

“Are you kidding me?” Nick asked her, going on to refer to the surgery Meredith performed back in season 14, “I’ve wanted to marry you since the last time I was in this bed.”

The moment is especially touching, as Nick has alluded to wanting to marry Meredith for several seasons—while Meredith has opted to prioritize her independence, career and kids.
