Monty Williams appears to shade how Donte DiVincenzo broke Knicks’ 3-point record

Monty Williams’ last few trips to Madison Square Garden are not ones where he seemed to have a good time.

In his latest visit, the Pistons coach wasn’t thrilled with being on the opposite side of a Knicks franchise record on Monday night when Donte DiVincenzo knocked down 11 3-pointers in a 124-99 Knicks win.

When Williams was asked about it after the game, he was blunt with his response.

“I don’t care about their team at all,” Williams said. “I couldn’t care less. Those guys, the way they got those threes. I don’t want to be a part of that story.”

When Josh Hart was asked about the comments Williams had after the game, the Knicks star had a simple solution for him.

“If he didn’t wanna be part of the story, he should’ve told his guys to defend better,” Hart told reporters. “I don’t know what else to say.  We got a guy that’s hot, we’re gonna try to find the guy that’s hot. That’s common sense basketball.”

DiVincenzo’s massive night also included putting up a career-high 40 points and is just eight 3-pointers behind Evan Fournier for the Knicks’ single-season record with 11 games still to go in the regular season.

The Knicks shooting guard had 20 3-point attempts in the win.

Williams’ last trip to the Garden resulted in a memorable ending in which a number of questionable no-calls led to a chaotic sequence that resulted in an and-1 for Hart to win the game with seconds left on the clock.

Williams went off on the officials after the game during a brief press conference in MSG.

“The absolutely worst call of the season,” he said at the time. “No call and enough is enough. We’ve done it the right way. We’ve called the league. We’ve sent in clips. We’re sick of hearing the same stuff over and over again.”
