Mike Vrabel gets first interview with Chargers after shock Titans firing

The Mike Vrabel sweepstakes begin in Hollywood.

The former Titans coach is in Los Angeles on Thursday to interview with the Chargers for their head coach opening, the first of his search, per NFL Network.

Vrabel is one of the top free-agent coaches, alongside Bill Belichick, but there has been little buzz about where he could land for the 2024 NFL season.

There had been rumors of Vrabel replacing Belichick in New England, but the Patriots hired Jerod Mayo just one day after moving on from the coaching legend.

The Chargers also interviewed former Stanford coach David Shaw on Thursday for their head coaching job, according to multiple reports.

There are seven openings as of Thursday afternoon: Panthers, Falcons, Chargers, Commanders, Seahawks, Titans and Raiders.

Belichick is scheduled to interview with the Falcons for the second time, while Dan Quinn is a heavy favorite to succeed Pete Carroll and return to Seattle.

If the Raiders install Antonio Pierce as their full-time coach, that would leave the Panthers, Chargers and Commanders as the possible openings for Vrabel.

It’s possible the Eagles job could be open if Nick Sirianni flunks his meeting with owner Jeffrey Lurie.

The Chargers are appealing since they have a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert, and the team has enough talent to be an immediate playoff contender.

Carolina and Washington represent jobs needing substantial rebuilds.

Vrabel, 48, accumulated a 54-48 record during his six seasons with the Titans, three of which resulted in playoff appearances.

The last two years went south in Nashville with the Titans going 7-10 and 6-11, including this year’s last-place finish.

Vrabel faces stiff competition in Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has interviewed for the role and is the betting favorite to land the gig.

Los Angeles has also interviewed interim coach Giff Smith, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore; Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan; former Vikings head coach Lezlie Frazier; Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald; 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks; Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

The Chargers are also searching for their general manager.

They have interviewed interim general manager JoJo Wooden; Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds; Saints assistant general manager Jeff Ireland; Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray; Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham; Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz and Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown for the position.
