Tyrod Taylor returning to Giants as Tommy DeVito question looms

The Giants have a quarterback decision to make.

The team is designating Tyrod Taylor to return from injured reserve and opening his 21-day practice window as the Giants return from a bye week ahead of next Monday night’s game against the Packers.

Taylor, the 34-year-old who’s making $5.5 million in the final year of a two-year contract, suffered a ribs injury against the Jets on Oct. 29.

After Daniel Jones tore his ACL in his return from a neck injury on Nov. 5, undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito has started the last three games for the Giants and has acquitted himself well over the last two games, helping them defeat the Commanders and Patriots.

The New Jersey native, 25, has quickly become a fan favorite, though it’s unclear if he has earned himself more starts over a returning Taylor, a one-time Pro Bowler with the Bills.

In Taylor’s start against Buffalo on Oct. 15, he went 24-for-36 for 200 yards in a 14-9 loss.

The following week, he went 18-for-29 with 279 yards and two touchdowns in a 14-7 win over the Commanders.

Taylor then completed just 4-of-7 passes for eight yards against the Jets before exiting.

DeVito replaced him and completed 2-of-7 passes for minus-one yards with Giants coach Brian Daboll seeming unwilling to let the undrafted quarterback attempt a pass against the Jets’ tough defense.

After a rough start in a blowout loss to the Cowboys on Nov. 12, DeVito went 18-for-26 with 246 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-19 win over Washington on Nov. 19.

He was 17-for-25 with 191 yards and a touchdown in a 10-7 win over the Patriots on Nov. 26 before the Giants’ bye week.
