5 New York women from same family killed by tractor-trailer in Pennsylvania: report

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Penn. – Five women from New York, who are believed to be from the same family, were killed on Tuesday when they were hit by a tractor-trailer after exiting their vehicles on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police said the crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. in Scott Township, north of Scranton, near mile marker 199.3.
According to state police, a 2022 Honda Odyssey, occupied by a female driver and three female passengers, lost control and crashed into the median, leaving the vehicle disabled in the left lane.
An Audi A6, carrying two relatives of the Odyssey occupants, immediately stopped on the right shoulder. State police said the two occupants of the Audi crossed both travel lanes to speak with those in the Odyssey, who were standing in the left lane.
That’s when state police said a northbound tractor-trailer crashed into the Odyssey on its driver’s side.
The investigation showed that four pedestrians were hit, killing three of them.
In addition, two people who were still inside the Odyssey at the time of impact were also killed.
Pennsylvania State Police identified the victims as:
- Harvrist Zebari, 42, of Endwell, New York
- Fatma Ahmed, 71, of Binghamton, New York
- Shahzinaz Mizouri, 56, of Vestal, New York
- Aleen Ameen, 19, of Johnson City, New York
- Berivan Zebara, 43, of Johnson City, New York
The driver of the Audi, who was identified as 22-year-old Parjan Ameen, of Johnson City, received moderate injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer also received minor injuries.
Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland told WOLF FOX 56 that the victims are believed to be from the same family.
A round of winter weather was impacting the Northeast, including Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, impacting travel. Many major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor broke their record snowless streaks on Tuesday, including Philadelphia.
According to the National Weather Service office in Binghamton, New York, several inches of snow had fallen in Lackawanna County during the storm on Tuesday.
Snow totals ranged from about 2.4 inches near Archbald to 4.5 inches in Moscow.
